Kanjira Palli is an ancient and famous historical and cultural place. The eastern regions including Kanjirapalli are believed to have belonged to the Chera Empire from the beginning of the Christian era to the 10th century. Later, between the tenth and fourteenth centuries, during the rule of the Tamils, Kanjirapalli was the center of the Tamil Chettis for about one square mile from Old Petta to Nellimala Petta (1st mile). There was a Tamil temple called Chakanchanavalli in Nellimala. This became Kekanchanapalli and later it became Kekanjirapalli.
St Dominic’s Cathedral was originally built as a church. It is situated on the banks of river Chittar in Vayampu Purayidam. The location of the cathedral is quite captivating. At a distance of 10 km from Erattupetta, and 48 km from Kottayam, Ayyampara is a rocky plateau located on Erattupetta-Muttom Road in Kerala. It is one of the major scenic places to visit as part of Kottayam tour packages.
Ayyampara is a lesser-known scenic spot of rocky plains where a 20-acre area of flat rock makes a natural granite stadium. The rocks at Ayyampara are situated over 2,000 ft above sea level and offer a panoramic view of the distant towns as well as nearby villages. It is considered as one of the must-visit Kottayam tourist attractions.
According to legends, the five Pandava brothers – epic heroes of the Mahabharatha – stayed near this rock during their exile. The name of the rock is said to be a modified version of the original term Anchupara (five rocks). However, some say that the name owes its origin to the Ayyappa Temple here. This temple has four pillars that support a flat piece of rock that forms the roof. On one side of the rock is a cave that can accommodate over 15 people.
These rocky plains are favorite destination for the adventure lovers. Various trekking expeditions are available. Kattikayam waterfalls is a beautiful fall situated in Melu, a small village in the eastern side of Meenachil Taluk in Kottayam District of Kerala. Being one of the less explored destinations in Kottayam district. Kattikayam waterfall is about 70 meters high, the rocks here are slippery and its advisable not to go near the narrow edges.
Kattikayam Waterfalls is about 2-3 kilometers from Illikkal Kallu. If you are coming from Illikal Kallu side, take the first left, which is the also the crossroad towards Illaveezhapunchira & Vagamon. After crossing approx 2kms, you need to take right towards a narrow road. Signboards are present there, but sometimes you may not notice them and will pass it. You can park your vehicle there on the roadside and can walk for another 1km in order to reach the waterfalls. This 1km passes through private properties and after crossing some private lands and a small river, you will reach the top of the Kattikayam waterfalls.
Unlike other waterfalls, in Kattikayam one should walk through the steep pathway through the sides of the waterfall which is constructed long back ago. This pathway will take you to the bottom of the waterfalls from where you can view the panorama of the waterfall and the surrounding area.

Marmala Waterfall is formed over the Meenachal River. The waterfall is about 60 meters (200 feet) in height and falling into a 12-meter deep pool. The waterfall is dangerous and not recommended for taking bath as the depth and force of the water is too high to bear. Replete with tall trees on the green-carpeted mountains, the clear cascading waters offer a sight like no other.
Slightly veiled amidst thick bushes and blue hills, the waterfall is the perfect place to get away from the hustle-bustle of the city and spend some moments of solitude to refresh and rejuvenate. Besides, the mesmerizing natural environment provides plenteous opportunities for photography enthusiasts to capture those picture-perfect moments in their cameras. The waterfalls also offer trekking opportunities.
Marmala waterfall is a bit remote from Teekoy, the nearest well-known place in the surroundings. The tourists can travel almost near to the rubber estate in a private vehicle but have to trek at least 2 km to reach the waterfalls. The trekking path is not well maintained like a famous tourist destination and the road is slippery and full of rocky obstacles. One needs to carry food and water bottles since there are no shops in the 7 km periphery.
