About Nagarjuna Sagar Dam:
Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is the world’s largest masonry dam. It was built on the Krishna River at Nagarjuna Sagar in between Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh state. NagarjunaSagar Dam is considered one of largest dams built in recent times in Asia. As the tallest masonry dam and the largest canal system network in India, the dam was completed in the year 1969 and has a majestic height of 124 meters. It is 1 km long, and has 26 crest gates.
Raja Vasireddy Ramagopala Krishna Maheswara Prasad, popularly known as late Muktyala Raja, was instrumental in the construction of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam through active political lobbying and the donation of crores of rupees (fifty-two lakhs in those day’s money) and fifty-five thousand acres of land.
