About State Museum and Zoo Thrissur:
Located in the heart of Thrissur city, the zoo is home to a wide variety of animals, reptiles and birds. Built in 1885, it is one of the oldest in the country, and one of the two zoological parks in Kerala.
As we observe Wildlife Week from October 2 to 8, it is worth remembering that the Thrissur Zoo is one of the best examples in the country of wildlife housed in a natural habitat, and is spruced up with timely maintenance.
Situated in 13.5 acres of land, the Thrissur Zoo premises are home to a Zoological Garden, Botanical Garden, a Natural History Museum, an Art Museum and a 3D Theatre. The Art Museum houses an exquisite collection of wood-carvings, metal sculptures, Kathakali figurines, ancient jewellery and some beautiful traditional Kerala lamps.
Open all days except Mondays, the zoo is home to 50-odd varieties of wild animals. Tigers, Deer, Lions, Sloth Bears, Monkeys, Hippopotamus, Camels, Crocodiles Mithun of the north-eastern hills and Lion-Tailed Macaques are some of the animals in the zoo. There is a building exclusively for snakes, where Cobras, Pythons, Kraits, Vipers and Rat Snakes command a lot of fearful attention from tourists.
