Kanjira Palli is an ancient and famous historical and cultural place. The eastern regions including Kanjirapalli are believed to have belonged to the Chera Empire from the beginning of the Christian era to the 10th century. Later, between the tenth and fourteenth centuries, during the rule of the Tamils, Kanjirapalli was the center of the Tamil Chettis for about one square mile from Old Petta to Nellimala Petta (1st mile). There was a Tamil temple called Chakanchanavalli in Nellimala. This became Kekanchanapalli and later it became Kekanjirapalli.
St Dominic’s Cathedral was originally built as a church. It is situated on the banks of river Chittar in Vayampu Purayidam. The location of the cathedral is quite captivating. Constructed in the year 1826, it was again renovated in 1945 and the reconstruction ended in 1961. In 1977, the church celebrated its 150th birthday on 17th March. It was then that the church was declared a cathedral. The cathedral attracts a number of devotees as well as tourists every year.
