Umananda Temple

About Umananda Temple:

The great Shiva temple situated on a hillock in the middle of the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati attracts devotees from all over the country, especially during the Shivaratri festival. The hillock is accessible by country boats and is called Bhasmachal(Peacock Island), where Shiva is believed to have turned Kamdev the God of Love, to ashes for disturbing his meditation. Regular ferry services are available to this place.

Evidence of a stone temple belonging to the post-Gupta period can be seen on the site. The site has stone sculptures and carvings belonging to the early medieval period. Achaturbhuja stone female figure still exists here besides rock-cut figures of Ganesha and a cave.
