The Assam Zoo cum Botanical Garden is a major tourist magnet because its perennial beauty is visible all throughout the year. The winter season between September and March is the best time to visit as the weather is chilly and perfect to explore the surroundings. The summer season from March to June is hot and doesn’t serve the purpose of sightseeing around. Although the main attractions of the zoo are the fauna exhibits, the zoo has a lot more of amenities to offer such as a botanical garden, museum, reptile house and a herbarium collection. The animals here at display range from the indigenous One horned Rhinoceros, Royal Bengal Tiger, Golden Langur and the Pig tailed Macaque to exotic ones like the African White Rhino, Black Rhinoceros, Giraffe and Kangaroo.
The Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden is the largest of its kind in the North East region and it is spread across 432 acre. The zoo is located within the Hengrabari Reserved Forest at Guwahati, India.
Initially, the plan for the zoo was put forth in 1957 but was opened to public viewing in 1958. The idea resulted during the 64th session of the Indian National Congress which was held in Guwahati. At its inception, there were only 22 species of animals and 31 species of birds. Over the years, the enclosure grew, and more provisions were made available for its sustenance.

This sacred temple in the heart of the capital city of Assam holds more than it meets the eye of the onlooker. The Kamakhya Temple had been built in reverence to Goddess Kamakhya or Sati, who was one of the numerous incarnations of Goddess Durga or Goddess Shakti.
‘Kamakhaya’ in Sanskrit means ‘lovemaking’. People worship Kamakhya Devi because they believesthat she unites soulmate, if you have fallen in love with someone and want him or her in your life, a special puja is conducted to make the person available in one’s life.It is believed that the Goddess menstruates during those days. On this occasion, men are not allowed to enter the temple and only female priests or sanyasis are allowed to serve the temple during those days.
Like the famous Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, the Kamakhya Peetham in Visakhapatnam also shuts its gates for men for some days in every month as it is believed that the goddess is having her menstruation cycle during this time.

It is known as smallest inhabited riverine island in the world. Legend has it that Lord Shiva lived here much to the ananda or joy of his consort Uma, another name for Parvati. Hence the name ‘Umananda’.
With a total area of 352 square kilometres (136 square miles), “Majuli” is the world’s largest river island and it attracts tourists from all over the world.
